So Many Kinds of Chocolate Chip Cookies, Sugar Cookies, and Oatmeal Cookies!
There are very few people in the world who do not like cookies. Cookies are universally loved, and it is no wonder why. These flour and sugar concoctions come in many shapes and sizes, so there is something for everyone. From the traditional chocolate chip cookie, to the cake cookies, the many different kinds of cookies will leave you wanting more.
The name ‘cookie’ comes from Dutch origins, originally ‘koekie,’ which means little cake. It is interesting to note then, that many cookies are now getting larger and larger, competing with cakes in terms of size. You can even decorate these cookies with icing to spell names and other words, such as ‘congratulations,’ or ‘thank you.’
When it comes to cookies, you cannot really go wrong. There are hard spice cookies, soft sugar cookies, cookies with nuts and raisins and even cookies that are not even baked. Though there are many styles, a few types of cookies stand out.
The most common type of cookie is perhaps the drop cookie. This is where the dough is soft and formed into small mounds, or drops, onto the cookie sheet. While in the oven, drop cookies will flatten out, to their well-known shape. Common examples of drop cookies are chocolate chip cookies or oatmeal cookies.
Another popular cookie type is the rolled cookie. With rolled cookies, one rolls out the dough and uses a cutter to make shapes. You might be familiar with gingerbread cookies, which are a type of rolled cookie. Similar to this cookie type is the pressed cookie, such as Spritzgebacks, which come from a cookie press in fancy shapes.
There are molded cookies, similar to drop cookies only you mold them with your hand, like snickerdoodles. Another example of molded cookies would be peanut butter cookies, which you shape before cooking.
Bar cookies and refrigerator cookies are other popular forms of cookies. With bar cookies, the baker will pour the batter into a pan, and cut after baking. Many bar cookies are formed with multiple layers. Refrigerator cookies are stiff, and usually rolled into cylinders and cut into slices. Similar to bar cookies, there are sandwich cookies, which are like two crackers with a sweet filling in the middle.
Though there are many different types of cookies on the market today, some old and some new, the most popular cookie is by far the modern style of creamed butter and sugar, which is demonstrated by the many popular styles mentioned previously. Far more popular than biscuits and other plain cookies, this modern cookie became common in the eighteenth century.
